Meeting NCAA Clearinghouse eligibility standards takes four full years of proper academic coursework. Therefore, we encourage student-athletes to use the Clearinghouse Calculator beginning their freshman year.
Learning about core courses and the NCAA Clearinghouse in the junior or senior year is often too late to address potential problems. The NCAA Working Group to Review Initial-Eligibility Trends stated in its 2006 report:
"Prospective-student-athletes are best served by early notification of their academic status for purposes of NCAA eligibility. There has been a growing trend of late Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse registration by students and by institutions. This leads to an inability to properly advise student-athletes regarding academic deficiencies."
Using the Clearinghouse Calculator as early as the freshman year, student-athletes will be better prepared for not only the NCAA Clearinghouse process, but also the general college admissions process as well.
Only a few freshmen student-athletes will have an opportunity to participate in college athletics, but many more hope to continue their education in college. Use of the Clearinghouse Calculator early in their high school career will help foster sound academic behaviors that will better prepare them for the academic rigors of college whether or not their athletic career continues. |
